Liliane Bettencourt, heiress to the L’Oreal Corporation, has died at the age of 94.

Hailed as the 14th richest person in the world, she has an estimated fortune worth $50 billion or $US 39.5 billion, making her the richest woman on Earth.

Francoise Bettencourt-Meyers, Liliane’s daughter, said that the heiress died at their home and “left peacefully” overnight in Neuilly-sur- Seine.

The Chairman and CEO of L’Oreal company, Jean-Paul Agon, said that he admired Bettencourt for she personally contributed much to L’Oreal’s success for many years. Furthermore, she also looked after the company and its employees.

Bettencourt was born in 1922 in Paris. She is the only daughter of Eugene Schueller, the founder of the top cosmetic in the world, L’Oreal. After her father’s death in 1957, she became the head of the company and remained the largest shareholder in L’Oreal.

She was married to a French Politician Andre Bettencourt, a former member of La Cagoule, who was L’Oreal’s executive, then later became the French cabinet minister. However, her husband died in 2007.

In 2011, Bettencourt suffered from mixed dementia and moderately severe Alzheimer disease. After showing the medical report, the court awarded her daughter an estimated wealth of 17 billion euros (20 billion dollars) and 33 per cent stake in L’Oreal. Known to be the world’s leading beauty company, L’Oreal has already amassed a huge amount of sales, which is amounting to 25.8 billion euros, and currently has 89,300 employees worldwide.

Bettencourt is survived by her daughter, Francoise.
