Crash Team Racing is Back, Remastered for Modern Consoles
It even has a release date announced already.
A classic multiplayer racing game well-loved by PlayStation players, is going back, just in time for its 20th anniversary. Activision announced during The Game Awards 2018 that the remaster of Crash Team Racing is on the way and will be released on June 21, 2019. Crash Bandicoot was even there to prove the announcement is the real deal.
Called Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, Activision said the remaster was “built from the ground up.” Then, Beenox is in charge of the development of the game.
Despite the graphics and audio overhaul, the game is still what fans remember from the PS1 original as the remaster will still include all the characters, tracks, and even the original game modes, such as Adventure, Arcade Single and Cup Race, Time Trials, and Battle modes. The striking difference between the PS1 classic and the remaster — aside from the overhaul — is the game will both include offline and online play.
Staying true to the original game, the Nitro-Fueled’s visual look will likely look the same from the remastered trilogy released last year, Vicarious Visions’ Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy.
“We boot up our PS1 and we start playing Crash Team Racing again, getting a sense of what that experience was and what the game we fell in love with to begin with [was],” Beenox’s Thomas Wilson told IGN. Wilson said the core part of the development is “authenticity to the original experience.”
“What we do is make sure when we’re tweaking the controls this feels right to the people who fell in love with the game in the first place and it feels right to newcomers.”
Wilson also shared their plans regarding the music of the game, saying: “We wanted to keep [the sounds of CTR] as close as possible, so we’re remastering the original soundtrack.”
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is slated to release on June 21, 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. The game will come with two editions: the standard edition for $39.99 and Nitros Oxide Edition for $59.99.
