Yes, that’s right, DC Comics’ crazies Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are coming to visit Riverdale with poor ol Archiekins probably in their sight. From Gotham’s frenzied underworld of madness into the warm and sunny side of Riverdale, bffenemies Betty and Veronica will be getting more of what they are bargaining for when they tangle with the two members of the infamous Gotham Sirens.
First reported by Entertainment Weekly, Harley & Ivy Meet Betty & Veronica is a six-issue mini crossover event involving publishers Archie and DC Comics. Leading the creative team is Harley Quinn’s co-creator, Paul Dini, who will write alongside Marc Andreyko, whose recent work was the limited series Wonder Woman 77. Laura Braga from DC Bombshells will be in charge of the art.
Paul Dini said in an upbeat statement:
“It’s the sort of offer you scream out ‘YES!’ to before your eyes reach the middle of the email. I’ve always wanted the chance to play in Riverdale, and to help Harley and Ivy invade it is a dream come true. Marc’s a great talent and a good friend. Writing this series with him has been like sitting on the lawn during summer vacation and reading a big pile of DC and Archie comics. Except we have to stay indoors and type a lot.”
Laura Braga also echoes the same excitement over the upcoming mini-series. “It’s going to be a blast to bring these amazing ladies together in this once-in-a-lifetime crossover,” said Laura. “Each character is different and special. While Harley is one of my favorite characters ever, Betty and Veronica are giving her a run for her money! I love all these ladies, and this book is going to be non-stop fun. ”
Who could have foreseen that the iconic frenemies Betty & Veronica will crosspaths with the recently established couple Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. Even Marc Andreyko was in disbelief: “When I got the call for this, I was in disbelief! Getting to co-write with Paul on a series bringing four of the most iconic ladies in comics together under one roof for the first time? This must be what winning the lottery feels like! I cannot wait for readers to see what mischief Paul, Laura, and I have dreamed up!”
The creators shared a brief plot in which will pit BFFs against BFFs. In a new campus being eyed to establish free college education for the upcoming class, Riverdale will need to drain a nearby swamp that is between Riverdale and Gotham City. We know that this mythos is unheralded, but welcome to the created universe in publisher crossovers. Draining a swamp mean destruction of the local fauna and Poison Ivy is a passionate defender of plant life. In response, Harley and Ivy will kidnap Veronica Lodge, richest gal in Riverdale and that is where the hilarity, craziness and misadventures start.
With the dark rendition of Archie & Friends in Riverdale getting a second season and the commercial success of Suicide Squad that catapulted Harley Quinn into mainstream status to even non-comic fans, crossovers like these cash in on the current popularity of the characters being pushed. Expect a Gotham Sirens spinoff as part of the DCEU in the future.
Harley & Ivy Meet Betty & Veronica #1 is on sale October 4, 2017, with a Cover by artist Amanda Conner, and an anticipated variant cover from Adam Hughes.
