Marvel television taps Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage; known for their work with Gossip Girl in adaptation of the series from print to small screen. Consider the show runners fans as well: “I’m a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn’t be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life,” said Josh Schwartz.
“Josh and I can’t wait to get to work for Marvel and Hulu,” added Stephanie Savage.
Marvel’s Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Television shares Schwartz and Savage’s enthusiasm in introducing the Runaways cast to audiences. “We’ve known the Runaways’ story would make great television.”
“And being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie–who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience–write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable,” Loeb said.
With the creation of The Runaways, Marvel expands once again into the direct streaming platform as Hulu joins Netflix and Freeform in featuring Marvel exclusives.
The Runaways series, originally created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona that first started in 2003 is considered one of Marvel’s finest works in bringing out fresh characters and endearing them to readers. What started out as a risk in introducing a team of mostly “runaways” in Marvel’s expansion and trying to attract more young readers, the comic series surpassed expectation in readership and lasting impression.
Runaways follow the story of a group of teenagers trying to escape their supervillain parentage in classic retelling of the coming of age story. The original crew of Nico Minoru, Karolina Dean, Molly Hayes, Chase Stein, Alex Wilder, Gertrude Yorkes, Old Lacea and late joiner Victor Mancha experience struggles, collision, friendship and tender moments where the open world helped reshaped their fates, otherwise was headed to villainy.
While the Runaways cast remain obscure in appearance in the comics for a couple of years after the series ended in 2009, Nico Minoru has had a resurgence with the ongoing series A-Force and Victor Mancha plays pivotal role in Vision.
Marvel had not released no further information about casting and target release date, but expect The Runaways to be another Marvel hit.
